Where Nature Sings its Own Tune: The Magic of Gorumara

Located in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, Gorumara is not just a park; it’s a living, breathing sanctuary. The land is blessed by the waters of the Murti and Raidak rivers, which nurture its vast grasslands and dense forests. This incredible variety of landscapes makes it the perfect home for some of India’s most precious wildlife, especially the magnificent one-horned Indian rhinoceros. Visiting Gorumara is like stepping into a storybook where every tree and animal plays a vital role in nature’s grand drama.

Meet the Residents: The Flora and Fauna of Gorumara

As you venture into the park, you’ll be surrounded by a lush canopy of Sal, Teak, and Shirish trees, with bamboo groves creating natural pathways. This vibrant greenery is not just for show; it’s a thriving ecosystem that supports an amazing diversity of life. The park is a proud home to about 50 species of mammals, including gentle giants like Asian elephants and mighty Indian bison (Gaur). Look closely, and you might even spot a leopard resting on a branch.

For birdwatching enthusiasts, Gorumara is nothing short of a paradise, with over 300 species of birds making their home here. Keep your eyes peeled for the stunning Great Indian Hornbill or the vibrant Scarlet Minivet. The air is filled with their songs, a constant reminder of the park’s thriving biodiversity. The forests are also rich in medicinal plants, some of which, like Chirayta, have been used in our traditions for centuries. For those who value natural wellness, you can find pure, high-quality herbs like Fresh & Natural Chirayta on our store.

Planning Your Gorumara Adventure in 2025

A little planning can make your trip truly memorable. Here’s everything you need to know for your 2025 visit.

The Best Time for a Visit

To truly experience the magic of Gorumara, plan your trip between November and March. The weather during these months is cool and pleasant, making the safaris enjoyable. More importantly, the chances of spotting wildlife are much higher as animals come out to bask in the gentle winter sun.

Park Timings and Entry Details

The park welcomes visitors from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, from Tuesday to Sunday. Please remember that the park remains closed on Mondays for maintenance. It is also completely shut from June 15th to September 15th due to the monsoon season, which is also the breeding period for many animals. The entry tickets are very reasonably priced at approximately INR 50 for adults and INR 25 for children, though these are subject to change.

The Thrill of a Jungle Safari

A jeep safari is the best way to explore the core areas of the forest. A jeep can accommodate up to 6 people and costs around INR 2200. It’s an experience worth every rupee, as a knowledgeable guide takes you through the winding paths, sharing stories and pointing out hidden wildlife. Booking your safari in advance is highly recommended, especially during peak season.

Views from the Watchtowers

Gorumara has several watchtowers like Jatraprashad, Chapramari, and Medla, which offer breathtaking panoramic views of the grasslands and riverbanks. These are fantastic spots for photography and patient wildlife watching. Entry fees for these watchtowers are separate and vary slightly depending on the tower and the time of day, generally ranging from INR 70 to INR 160.

A Place to Rest Your Head: Accommodation Options

There are plenty of options for every kind of traveller. For those seeking comfort, resorts like Aranya Jungle Resort in Lataguri or Sinclairs Retreat Dooars in Chalsa are excellent choices. For a more authentic experience, you can stay at the forest department’s accommodations inside the forest, such as the Gorumara Eco Village at Kalipur or the Gorumara Elephant Camp at Dhupjhora. These stays offer a unique chance to live right in the lap of nature.
