A poignant tale speaks of Kannappan, a tribal hunter who resided in the dense forests where the temple now stands. A fervent devotee of Mahakali, he adhered to the practice of animal sacrifice. One day, his compassionate daughter, Pavizham (also known as Manimanga), begged him to spare a calf meant for sacrifice. Touched by her plea, Kannappan relented. However, tragedy struck when Pavizham passed away soon after. Overwhelmed with grief, Kannappan discovered two stones where the calf had been, which a priest identified as representing Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. To atone, he built a humble shrine, marking the beginning of Chottanikkara’s sacred history.

The Pulaya Woman’s Discovery:
Time marched on, and Kannappan’s shrine fell into disrepair. One day, a Pulaya woman, while gathering grass, unknowingly sharpened her scythe on a stone, which miraculously began to bleed. This divine sign revealed the sacred presence once again, leading to the temple’s reconstruction and eventual rise to prominence.

Adi Shankaracharya’s Divine Encounter:
Another legend connects the temple to the revered Adi Shankaracharya. It is said he yearned for a temple dedicated to Saraswati in Kerala. The goddess agreed to accompany him, but on the condition that he must not look back to check on her. However, when the jingling of her anklets ceased, Shankaracharya, overcome with concern, turned back. Saraswati, bound by her condition, established her temple at Kollur (Mookambika). Yet, it is believed she graces Chottanikkara with her presence every morning before returning to Kollur.
