Chhath Puja: A Sacred Tribute to the Sun God

Chhath Puja is a significant Hindu festival dedicated to Surya Dev (the Sun God) and his consort Chhathi Maiya (Usha). Widely observed across the Indian subcontinent, the festival is known for its deep spiritual significance, rigorous rituals, and heartfelt expressions of gratitude toward nature.

When is Chhath Puja Celebrated?

Chhath Puja takes place on the sixth day (Shashti) of the Kartik lunar month (October–November), just after Diwali. It spans four days, each marked by unique rituals and devotions.

Four Days of Rituals

  1. Naha Khana
The festival begins with a ceremonial bath and a pure, home-cooked meal, marking the start of spiritual cleansing.

  2. Kharna
Devotees observe a day-long fast, which is broken with a special offering. This is followed by a 36-hour nirjala fast—without food or water.

  3. Sandhya Arghya
Offerings (arghya) of water and milk are made to the setting sun at riverbanks or water bodies, symbolizing gratitude and humility.

  4. Bhor Arghya
On the final day, devotees offer arghya to the rising sun, concluding the puja with prayers for well-being, prosperity, and harmony.
